All Hail the King

KingJames1611.jpgHistory’s favorite edition of the Bible is celebrating its four-hundredth birthday this year to much fanfare. Writers and scholars have been lauding the poetry, idioms, and history of the King James Bible since January. The Globe Theater in London even used twenty actors to read all sixty-six books during the week leading up to Easter. For the latest in literary tributes to the quadricentennial of the King James edition, look no further than the June issue of Harper’s. The magazine explains the lingering influence of the book this way: “Reading the King James Bible aloud is no longer the cornerstone of an American education, even for the religiously devout…Yet the language of the King James Bible remains our language.”
