Celebrating Bob Dylan at 70

Seventy isn’t that old anymore. So why is it that Bob Dylan, who reaches that milestone on May 24, seems so positively ancient—a feature of the cultural landscape itself, whose age should be calculated in geological eons, not anything so ephemeral as months and years?

Partly it is because we have heard so much from Dylan—his Web site lists no fewer than 56 albums, compilations, and live recordings, and those are just the official releases. And we’ve read so much about him. “Everybody knows by now that there’s a gazillion books on me either out or coming out in the near future,” he recently bragged/lamented.
